Mark 10

Not So With You

Mark 10:35-45

Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. "Teacher," they said, "we want you to do for us whatever we ask." (36) "What do you want me to do for you?" he asked. (37) They replied, "Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory." (38) "You don't know what you are asking," Jesus said. "Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?" (39) "We can," they answered. Jesus said to them, "You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with, (40) but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared." (41) When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John. (42) Jesus called them together and said, "You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. (43) Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, (44) and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. (45) For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

God Invented Family

Mark 10:2-16

Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?" (3) "What did Moses command you?" he replied. (4) They said, "Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away." (5) "It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law," Jesus replied. (6) "But at the beginning of creation God 'made them male and female.' (7) For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, (8) and the two will become one flesh.' So they are no longer two, but one. (9) Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate." (10) When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. (11) He answered, "Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. (12) And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery." (13) People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. (14) When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. (15) I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it." (16) And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them.
